Kids Day at the Beach
Silvergate Bank is a proud sponsor of the annual “Kid’s Day at the Beach,” a non-profit event offering fun, sun and surfing instruction for underprivileged children in the San Diego area.
Over 60 children from St. Vincent de Paul Shelter for Homeless Families, located in downtown San Diego, take part in the “Kid’s Day” event. Each year the children have the opportunity to learn how to surf and enjoy a beachside barbecue lunch and bags of goodies donated by local and national sponsors. The event teaches coordination and promotes confidence and enhanced self-esteem.
The Day at the Beach Foundation was founded by Scot Cherry, a member of the WindanSea Surf Club in La Jolla. Harold Reid is the event’s director and he is assisted by a team of generous supporters from the WindanSea Surf Club, who volunteer and fundraise for the “Kid’s Day” event. Volunteers from across Southern California, including members from other surfing organizations, also attend and assist in teaching the children.
“For many of these children, Kid’s Day at the Beach is the first time they have ever been to the ocean, even if they have grown up in San Diego,” says Reid. “The joy this event puts in their hearts is evident; it shows on their faces and makes everything we do to put on this event worth it one hundred times over. We anticipate another exceptional turnout of both children and volunteers this year.”
In past years, Kid’s Day has attracted such surfing legends as Mike Doyle, John Peck, surf photographer Tom Keck, and other local legends like Peter King, Saxon Boucher, and more.
Silvergate Bank has been instrumental over many years by organizing fundraising and funds management. The company has created a portal through their home page where supporters can donate money to Kid’s Day electronically. Ocean Minded has joined WindanSea Surf Club as co-sponsor. The La Jolla YMCA also donates a bus and arranges for a driver each year.
